Shift light pattern

Here are some helpful answers to some questions you may have. If you can't find the answer you're looking for, please get in touch and we'll be happy to help.

How do I attach the Power and RPM connections?

The Positive power connection should be taken from a switched fused supply.  Locate a suitably fused battery positive available from the vehicle fuse box.  If required a suitable blade ‘Add-a-Fuse’ connector may be used in order to access a separate fused supply for the Shift Lights.  For the Ground connection a suitable vehicle ground point should be located and connected.  Ensure if attaching to the vehicle chassis that a clean connection is made.  For the RPM connection, locate a suitable point in the Tachometer feed or the suitable RPM output from the ECU.  Please check your vehicle wiring circuit diagram for suitable connection points.

I don’t see any Shift Lights whilst driving, but the Demo mode works ok.

This could be due to a couple of reasons.  First check, using the Wifi configuration, that the Pulses per Revolution setting is configured correctly.  This should match the number of sparks per revolution that the engine produces.  Check the setting against the specification for your engine.  Secondly check the Scheme settings to ensure that the RPM Thresholds are set correctly and matched to the available RPM for your engine.

Can I mount the Processor Unit inside the Engine compartment?

The Shift Lights are designed with a Processor Unit and a remotely located Display Unit.  The Processor Unit can be mounted anywhere in the vehicle, however it is recommended to be mounted within the passenger compartment for protection.  If the Processor Unit is to be located outside the passenger compartment it is recommended to house the unit within an appropriately specified container.  Neither the Processor Unit or the Remote Display Unit are IP rated.

Can I extend the cables for the Remote Display Unit?

It is possible to extend the cable length for the Remote Display Unit.  This may be necessary for unusually complex installations where the cable routing is difficult.  For this, extension leads are available from MadGab Electronics.  Alternatively the cable may be extended using appropriately specified cable and connectors.  These are also available from MadGab Electronics.

The Display Colours differ from the Wifi settings.

The Remote Display Unit is able to display the full range of Red, Green and Blue colours allowing for just over 16 million colour combinations.  However it should be noted that due to the limitations of the display the actual visual colour may differ slightly from that displayed on the Wifi device.  It is recommended to set the Shift Lights in Demo mode then adjust the displayed colours until the required colour combination is achieved.

I can’t set the RPM Threshold to 6523?

The RPM Thresholds have a minimum resolution of 10 RPM.  This means that the settings are only available to be set to the nearest 10 RPM.  So in this case the RPM setting should be either 6520 or 6530.  This restriction provides a good compromise between the RPM hysteresis and accuracy.  The minimum RPM setting that can be entered is 250 RPM and a maximum of 12000 RPM. These are set to cater for most typical use cases.  If alternative or more specialist settings are required please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Is it possible to have a customised design or different Display Unit?

MadGab Electronics are able to customise both the Processor Unit and the Remote Display Unit to meet most customer requirements.  We also offer a wide range of engineering design services, including Electronics, Software and Mechanical engineering, taking a product from initial concept through to production.  Please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Can I set the unit to only display all lights at the shift point and not elsewhere?

You can set almost any combination of RPM thresholds and light patterns.  If you only require the lights to flash at the shift point and at no other time, this can be configured using the Wifi configuration and setup features. Refer to the Operating Instructions on how to start and use the Wifi.  Once connected to the Wifi with your device select the Scheme Setup and choose the Scheme you wish to configure.  With the setting screen displayed simply set all the lights to off except the RPM Shift setting.  Set the RPM threshold to the value required then set the light colours and pattern required.  Save the scheme, which will store the new settings in the Shift Light units.
